We analysed the Care Quality Commission directory produced on 4 November 2026. It covers England only and counts locations.

So most providers are single-branch businesses, where the registered manager or owner may be the buyer. Some may also use a different code from 88100, which could be one reason the two figures do not match.

Where Home Care SIC Codes Fall Short
- Mixed codes. Providers may list 88990, 86900 or residential codes.
- Franchises. Each branch may be a separate company under a shared brand.
- Other UK nations. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own regulators.

- Start from the regulator. Use CQC locations in England.
- Separate branches from groups. Use the provider name in the data.
- Choose the role. That could be a registered manager or an owner.
- Test a sample. Check it against the CQC directory.
